Hormonal Imbalances

Firstly it is essential to know what hormones are. Hormones are chemical “messengers” produced by glands like the thyroid, that help to activate and coordinate different body system functions, such as growth, appetite, sleep, sexual function, and mood. There are many different types of hormones in the body, including estrogen, testosterone and progesterone that come from the ovaries. Hormone levels naturally go up and down at various stages in our lives. For you to feel your best, your hormones need to find a balance. Women approaching perimenopause or menopause are commonly faced with hormone imbalance. Dr Hendricks can help, but it may be up to you to recognize that you are experiencing the symptoms of hormone imbalance.

Common signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalance in women:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Low libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Acne
  • Brain fog/memory and the ability to think clearly are affected
  • Fatigue/Low energy
  • Digestive problems
  • Irritable, anxious or depressed
  • Mood swings
  • Change in appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning hair or an increase in hair on the face
  • Heart palpitations
  • Hormonal imbalance caused by PCOS may increase the chance of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, infertility and uterine cancer

The doctor will advise lifestyle changes such as better eating habits, increased activity level and more sleep. If necessary, evaluations and tests can be done, such as a hormone profile blood test, to determine which hormones need adjustment. In many cases, the Doctor can prescribe hormone replacement therapy (oral medication), to restore the balance. Treatments for PCOS-related hormonal imbalance include birth control pills, ovarian drilling procedures, and drugs like spironolactone. Birth control pills, patches and vaginal rings can help lower testosterone levels, decreasing excessive hair growth and acne breakouts.
